RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard is one of more than 160 law school deans urging congressional leaders to continue support of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). A nonprofit corporation funded by Congress, the LSC promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high quality civil legal assistance to financial challenged Americans.
The letter, sent on March 23 and signed by 166 law school deans, was mailed to the Chairs of the U.S. House and Senate Committees on Appropriations and the Subcommittees on Commerce, Justice, Science, & Related Agencies.
“Public service and access to justice have long been hallmarks of Campbell Law, as well as my own personal career,” said Leonard. “The reality is acquiring legal representation is an insurmountable task for many honest, hardworking Americans. This was never the intent. I stand with my colleagues in urging for strong support of the Legal Services Corporation now more than ever.”
The letter touts funding for the LSC as a wise public investment, nothing that civil legal services can aid children in leaving foster care, reduce unjust foreclosures and evictions and help end cycles of domestic violence. The contributing law school deans represent a wide assortment of public and private institutions of all sizes throughout the country.
