BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Dean Dr. Kevin O’Mara recently presented at the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Raleigh chapter’s 2016 Annual Conference. The topic of Dean O’Mara’s presentation was “The Innovation Imperative.” The event was held Monday, Nov. 14 in downtown Raleigh at Campbell Law School.
“It is nearly impossible to pick up a business periodical or listen to a discussion of business leaders without the topic of innovation coming to the forefront,” said O’Mara. “For the past decade, the Boston Consultant Group’s global CEO survey revealed approximately 75% of CEOs consistently placed innovation among their top three priorities and nearly 25% cite it as their number one priority. No other priority comes even close to these numbers.
“Innovation doesn’t just happen. The more innovative organizations are very intentional in how they are designed for innovation. Innovation has to be managed just like any other critical organizational process. And it has to be appropriately tracked. The accounting function in most organizations track performance and provide the needed information for future decisions. In a changing environment where innovation is becoming more and more crucial for organizational success and survival, the accounting function has to adjust and adapt how it tracks performance and what type of information it compiles. Often, in an innovative organization, this is a new and different requirement from past approaches.
“One important benefit to Campbell Business from the talk was a commitment by the regional IMA Chapter to start a student chapter here at Campbell, hopefully this spring semester.”
