BUIES CREEK – A victim services practitioner, a pastor and an assistant director of development were named distinguished alumni of the College of Arts and Science’s Department of History, Criminal Justice and Political Science on Saturday, Oct. 20, during the department’s 22nd Annual Alumni Brunch in D. Rich Memorial Building.
Brittany Leah Murray (’08) received the Distinguished Criminal Justice Alumna Award, the Rev. A. Shane Nixon (’92) the Distinguished Political Science Alumnus Award, and Timothy Michael Young (’00) the Distinguished History Alumnus Award.

Brittany Leah Murray (’08), Distinguished Criminal Justice Alumna
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s 2010 Employee of the Year, Brittany Leah Murray is a certified victim services practitioner in North Carolina. She’s a member of the Domestic Violence Community Council and the Sexual Assault Response Team for Forsyth County and provides community and clergy training on domestic violence and sexual assault. The City of Winston-Salem awarded her its 2010 Rising Star Award. In 2011, she received a grant from the N.C. Governor’s Crime Commission to provide officers within the Winston-Salem Police Department with 110 digital cameras, which are used to document injuries or property damage related to domestic violence incidents. She earned a B.A. in criminal justice from Campbell University in 2008.
Rev. A. Shane Nixon’92, Distinguished Political Science Alumnus
The Rev. A. Shane Nixon is the senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Mocksville, N.C. Before joining the church in March 2011, he worked for more than seven years as a “webminister” and technology coach for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Previously, he was the chief information officer of the Baptist Children’s Home of North Carolina and director of church/community relations of Baptist Retirement Homes of North Carolina. He was ordained as both a deacon and a minister by the First Baptist Church in Burlington, N.C., in 2003. He earned a B.A. in political science from Campbell University in 1992.
Timothy Michael Young ’00, Distinguished History Alumnus
Since 2008, Timothy Michael Young has been the assistant director of development and alumni relations at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, where he’s responsible for prospect managements functions, including identifying new prospective donors and stewarding the school’s alumni, parents and friends. He also volunteers as a disciplinary advisor with Duke’s Student Affairs Office of Student Conduct and as an academic advisor with Duke’s undergraduate Academic Advising Center. He earned a Master of Arts in international studies and political science from N.C. State University in 2003 and a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Duke in 2006. He earned a B.A. in history from Campbell University in 2000.
