Disc Golf comes to Campbell University

A new activity is coming to Campbell University. This school year, students and the community can tee off on a new 18-hole disc golf course that will be in the wooded area within the cross-country course trail.

Director of Campus Recreation, Andy Shell, said students have recently shown an interest in this sport. Around the same time, Charles Robinson, 1987 Campbell alum, asked Shell if he could help design and implement a disc golf course. From there, they worked together and received a grant from the Disc Golf Foundation to help build a course.

“A round of disc golf gets you into the great outdoors and is also good exercise,” said Robinson.

According to the Professional Disc golf association’s website- Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the “hole.”

During the construction of the course, an effort was made to bring natural features of the landscape into play, such as creeks, branches, rock outcroppings, elevation changes and trees.

“Players will find the Campbell course to be fun and challenging,” said Robinson. “Since the course is in a wooded setting, the fairways are tighter and require control and precision. Most holes have alternate tee locations for even more variety. The goal was to make the course challenging, but fair, and most importantly, fun for both novices and experienced players.”
