David M. Moffitt, assistant professor of New Testament and Greek for Campbell Divinity, has had his doctoral dissertation published as part of the Novum Testamentum Supplements series.
The book, “Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews,” was published by Brill, a scholarly publishing company founded in 1863 and operating out of Leiden, The Netherlands, and Boston.
This study of Hebrews “demonstrates that Jesus’ embodied, resurrected life is crucial for the high-priestly Christology and sacrificial soteriology developed in Hebrews,” according to the book’s description. Moffitt used contemporary studies of Jewish sacrifice, parallels in Jewish apocalyptic literature and his own exegetical insights to develop his conclusions.
Moffitt received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 2010. A native of Rochester, NY, he holds a bachelor of arts degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, a master of divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois and a master of theology from Duke Divinity School. During his doctoral program, he spent a year in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar studying at the Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen. Moffitt has published articles in scholarly journals such as the “Journal of Biblical Literature,” “Zeitschrift für die Neutestamentliche Wissenschaft und die Kunde der Älteren Kirche,” “Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik” and “Perspectives in Religious Studies.”
Before coming to Campbell Divinity in 2011, he served as visiting assistant professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School.
