Buies Creek, N.C.—Dr. Andrew Wakefield, associate professor of New Testament and Greek at the Campbell Divinity School, has been named to the Tyner Chair of Bible.
The Lewis Edward and Martha Barnes Tyner Chair of Bible was established in 1964 by the board of trustees to honor a family who played an important role in the history of Campbell University. The late Lewis Edward and Martha Barnes Tyner became associated with Campbell at the turn of the century when Martha Tyner moved to Buies Creek so that her seven children could attend Buies Creek Academy, while Lewis Edward Tyner remained at home in Robeson County. Their grandson, H.W. Baucom, Jr. served as a Campbell trustee and a second son of the family, also a trustee, helped charter the future policies of the university as it developed into a senior college.
“I am tremendously honored and grateful to be named to the Tyner Chair of Bible,” said Dr. Wakefield. “The Tyner family, along with the previous holders of the chair, have set a high standard for faithful service to Campbell University. I am proud to be given this opportunity to follow in their footsteps.”
The son of missionary parents, Dr. Andrew Wakefield grew up in the Philippines and Singapore. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University, graduating summa cum laude with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Wakefield earned a master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received the Broadman Seminarian Award for outstanding achievement in Biblical Studies. He received a Ph.D. in New Testament from Duke University. As an ordained minister, Wakefield has served as interim pastor for many churches around the state. He came to Campbell in 1997 and received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003. Wakefield has produced a number of publications and currently serves as the associate editor for the journal Review and Expositor.
The Campbell University Divinity School opened in 1996 with 35 students. The school offers the Master of Divinity, the Master of Arts in Christian Education, the joint Master of Divinity/Master of Arts in Community Counseling, and the Doctor of Ministry degree.
