Dr. Tom Long, Professor of Preaching at Candler School of Theology, will lead the 2006 Staley Lecture Series on March 13-14 at Campbell University. Dr. Long is the chair of the advisory committee for “Day 1,” the award-winning ecumenical radio program (formerly “The Protestant Hour”). In a survey of preaching professors conducted by Baylor University, he was chosen as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world. The theme of the lectures will be “The Scripture Comes Alive in Preaching.” Lecture one on Monday night at 7 p.m. will center on “The Acoustical Impact of the Biblical Text.” The second session at 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday morning will be titled “Narrative Text, Narrative Sermon.” The last lecture will begin at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday and is titled “Puzzles, Paradoxes, and Parables.” All of the continuing education lectures will be held in the Taylor Hall of Religion on the Buies Creek campus. “He is definitely among America’s finest homileticians and preachers,” says Dr. Roy E. De Brand, Professor of Preaching at Campbell University Divinity School. “His writing is insightful and helpful to novices and veterans of the pulpit, always fresh and engaging. His sermons are filled with passion and humor. It is quite a coup for us to have him at Campbell; he is in great demand.” Dr. Long’s publications include: The Witness of Preaching, Second Edition (2005); Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian (2004); Beyond the Worship Wars: Building Vital and Faithful Worship (2001); Hebrews (Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching,) ( 1997); and Matthew (Westminster Bible Companion Series (1997).
