Durham pastor will speak on ethnic similarities at Multicultural event

Buies Creek–Dr. Kenneth Ray Hammond, pastor of Union Baptist Church of Durham, will be the featured speaker at a lecture sponsored by Campbell University’s Multicultural Council scheduled for Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Hammond will speak on the ways in which ethnicities are related, rather than divided.”In a post-racial society, issues of diversity, culture and difference have taken on new meaning,” Hammond said. “In many ways there is more that unites than separates us.”In his lecture, Hammond will explore these issues and the challenges confronting modern society.A preacher, teacher and community builder, Hammond has served as pastor of Union Baptist Church for over 16 years. He has been instrumental in the growth of the congregation from 1,500 to over 4,500 members. Prior to coming to Union in 1992, Hammond served as pastor of Mount Shiloh Baptist Church in Williamston, N.C. and Cedar Grove Baptist in Greenville, N.C.Hammond received a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Arts in Education with a Certificate of Advanced Study from East Carolina University. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Shaw University and has performed doctoral studies at North Carolina State University. He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and was named to “Who’s Who in Education” and “Who’s Who Among Black Americans.” In 2001, “Gospel Today” magazine named him one of “America’s Most Loved Pastors.”He is past moderator of the American Baptist Churches of the South, Area III, and a past member of the American Baptist Churches of the South Board of Directors. Hammond is also a member of the General Board and the Executive Committee of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Inc. He serves on the board of directors for the Greater Durham YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, the Durham County Hospital Corporation, New Vision Community Development and the Joyland Foundation.
