Engineering’s Tau Beta Pi earns national chapter award

Campbell University School of Engineering’s Tau Beta Pi chapter (North Carolina Theta) received the Chapter Project Award from the national organization in its first year of existence, the School announced this week.

The award recognizes chapters for their high-impact service, outreach and professional development programs.

“Tau Beta Pi is a student-led organization, and this award reflects the dedication and hard work of our student officers over the past two years,” said Dr. Alison Polasik, associate professor of engineering and the lead advisor for the group. “They organized an outstanding range of professional development and service activities that have enriched our School of Engineering community. We are incredibly proud of them, and pleased to see their efforts recognized with this award.”

Tau Beta Pi officers Jay Mitchell and Rachel Stokes represented Campbell University at the annual convention held earlier this month in Tucson, Arizona, and received the award on the School’s behalf.

“Tau Beta Pi is internationally known for recognizing outstanding academic accomplishments and character in engineering majors,” said Dr. Jenna Carpenter, founding dean of the School of Engineering and one of the chapter’s advisors. “We are thrilled to be part of this prestigious organization and to provide our engineering majors with the opportunity to be recognized in this way.”

Founded in 1885 at Lehigh University, Tau Beta Pi currently has 257 active college chapters. Executive Director Curt Gomulinski said the society was thrilled to welcome Campbell to its ranks.

“The inspection team that visited Campbell was thoroughly impressed with the facilities available to Campbell engineering students and the close community environment fostered by the faculty and administration,” Gomulinski said. “Likewise, our Petitions Committee and the Convention body overwhelmingly voted to grant a chapter to Campbell University after a detailed presentation to both groups.”

Tau Beta Pi’s mission is to provide leadership and professional development training for engineering students and alumni, recognize those who confer honor on their alma mater through distinguished scholarship and exemplary character and promote lifelong alumni member involvement and cultivating a community of “dedicated high achievers.”
