RALEIGH, N.C. – Incoming first-year student Austin “Dutch” Entwistle has been selected to receive the first Excellence in Advocacy Scholarship from Campbell Law School. The award is one of three new, highly prestigious, full-tuition awards.
The Excellence in Advocacy Scholarship stays true to Campbell Law’s mission to educate and develop vigorous advocates for championing and defending individual liberties and justice. Beginning with the 2014-15 academic year, the scholarship will be annually awarded to one incoming law student who has achieved demonstrable success in advocacy programs such as debate or mock trial during high school and/or college.
“I am honored to receive such a distinguished award from the professors and institution of Campbell Law,“ said Entwistle. “This scholarship demonstrates a mutual commitment between myself and this school to protect individual liberties and, as the first to be awarded this scholarship, my goal is to further add to Campbell Law’s legacy of vigorously pursuing justice in the community.“
A recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Entwistle assembled a strong advocacy profile as an undergraduate student with the UNC – Chapel Hill mock trial team. In addition to competing at local and regional tournaments, Entwistle also participated at the University of Pennsylvania Mock Trial Tournament. He was also responsible for designing and executing direct and cross examinations for the team. Outside of advocacy, Entwistle has served as a legal research intern and volunteered with Push America and Best Buddies.
An internal scholarship selection committee comprised of advocacy experience from within the Campbell law community interviewed an impressive assortment of finalists prior to ultimately selecting Entwistle. Campbell Law Assistant Professor of Law and Director of Advocacy Dan Tilly steered the committee alongside Associate Professor of Law Mike Kent.
“Dutch is a remarkable individual who excelled as a student and advocate at the undergraduate level,“ said Tilly. “He is both intellectually gifted and naturally articulate on his feet. We have every expectation that Dutch will distinguish himself as one of the finest law school advocates in the country and are proud to have selected him to receive the first Excellence in Advocacy Scholarship.”
