Buies Creek, N.C.—The Richard Brunson family was recognized as Campbell University’s 2008 Family of the Year at the school’s second home football game, Saturday, Sept. 20. The Brunsons were selected based on their support and participation in their children’s education and an essay written by Campbell senior, Meredith Brunson. The Brunson’s son, Nathan, is also a Campbell sophomore.
“I was 11 years old and my brother Nathan and I had just attended a week-long camp at Campbell University,” Brunson wrote. “I can remember when my parents picked us up from camp and I told them that I wanted to go to Campbell when I grew up.”
Though out the years, Brunson’s family has continued to be supportive, she explained. They have served on the Parents Committee, been involved in many Campbell events and father Richard Brunson, director of the North Carolina Baptist Men, has spoken at numerous campus events.
“Without the support of my parents, I would not have been able to attend Campbell,” Brunson said. “They have both made sacrifices to make it possible. But more than financial support, they have encouraged us to pursue our passions.”
Brunson’s mother Lesley serves as the music minister at Highland Baptist Church in Garner and her youngest brother, Taylor, is 15.
The Family of the Year is selected by Campbell University’s Office of Student Life. Selections are based on evidence of the family’s support for the student’s success in college, support and enthusiasm for Campbell University and the quality of the student essay.
In addition to being honored, the Meredith Brunson received a full book scholarship for the spring semester, sponsored by Barnes & Nobles Bookstore at Campbell.
“Although I am sad that this is my final year at Campbell University, I will have nothing but pleasant memories when I look back on my college years,” Brunson said. “I know that my parents will continue to support Campbell after Nathan and I graduate and that there will probably be another Brunson at Campbell in a few years.”
