Buies Creek, N.C.- On Saturday, Sept. 5, Campbell football fans not only cheered for the Fighting Camels’ first home game win, but also for the dedication of the new football field named in honor of Edward M. Gore. Gore is a long time friend and benefactor of Campbell. The dedication took place during half time ceremonies at the season-opener against Methodist University.
The state of the art Ed Gore Field occupies two acres of artificial Astro Turf Gameday Grass designed to lessen athletic injuries. The field contains a unique drainage system that can process six inches of rainfall per hour and is created to facilitate multiple sports including football, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey.
After graduating from Campbell in 1952, Ed Gore went on to earn a degree in business from East Carolina University. He served in the U.S. Air Force and married his wife Dinah in 1959. Subsequently the Gores joined Ed’s father Mannon C. Gore, founder of Sunset Beach, in his real estate development business. The Gores are among the founding families of the Sea Trail Corporation resort community.
Gore and his wife Dinah are considered primary forces behind University expansion. In addition to heading up capital campaigns, the Gores’ generosity includes funding the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center Arena in memory of son Gilbert Craig Gore and the Anna Gardner and Robert B. Butler Chapel’s bell tower and prayer room. The Gores are also co-founders of a major resource for students and faculty at Campbell, the Gore Center for Servant Leadership, dedicated to the development of servant leadership skills through projects, internships, course work and other opportunities.
Gore currently serves as a member of the Campbell University Board of Trustees and as chairman of the Campbell University Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising and managing private support for the university. In 2007, Ed and Dinah Gore received the Honorary Doctor of Laws for their outstanding civic and professional contributions.
