Fine Arts Department unveils spring lineup of concerts, shows, events

Campbell University’s Fine Arts Department announced its anticipated calendar of events for the spring 2024 semester. The lineup features a diverse range of performances, exhibitions and shows highlighting Campbell’s talented musicians, vocalists and actors.

The spring season kicks off Friday with “Be Our Guest,” a partnership and fundraising performance from Campbell’s Opera Theatre and the Campus Pantry. The 7 p.m. show — to be held in Scott Concert Hall — will feature music from American Musical Theatre and the Great American Songbook that sing the praises of food, such as “Be Our Guest,” “Coffee Break,” “Vanilla Ice Cream” and “Food, Glorious Food.” Audience members are asked to bring a food item to contribute to the Pantry in what is otherwise a free performance.

Another highlight from January will be the Sound of the Sandhills Marching Band’s trip to Louisiana to take part in the Krewe of Poseidon Mardi Gras Parade in Slidell, just outside of New Orleans. The band will perform in front of roughly 30,000 to 40,000 spectators and join notable bands like Southern University’s renowned “Human Jukebox” marching band.

The Theatre Department will present “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett at Ellis Theatre at 7 p.m. Feb. 22-24 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 25. The tragic comedy focuses on two characters who engage in a variety of discussions and encounters while they await the titular Godot, who never arrives.

Recitals will fill much of February and March before the “concert” portion of the semester kicks in on March 24 with the Choral Society Spring Concert at Butler Chapel. The University Choir Spring Concert will follow on April 4 at Scott Concert Hall, and on April 9, the 23rd annual Wind Ensemble & Symphony Pops Concert will be held in the Hobson Performance Center.

Several ensemble concerts are slated for April — the Percussion Ensembles Spring Concert at Hobson Performance Center on April 11, the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Collaborative Spring Concert at Hobson on April 16 and the Chamber Ensembles Spring Concert on April 18, also at Hobson Performance Center.

The “Front Porch Music @ The FAB” will return to the front porch of Taylor Bott Rogers Hall on April 19 with performances by Opera Theatre and Campbell Voices.

Campbell Theatre returns April 18-21 with “The Giver,” adapted by Eric Coble from the Newbery Award-winning book by Lois Lowry. And art enthusiasts can look forward to Feb. 13 when Taylor Bott-Rogers Gallery will host the Breonna Tolson-Tucker Senior Exhibition Opening and Reception, providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their exceptional work.
