RALEIGH, N.C. – Five Campbell Law alumnae have received a 2013 Women of Justice Award from North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. Elizabeth Freshwater-Smith (L ’86), Rebecca Britton (L ’92), Joy Brewer (L ’96), Mary Stansell (L ’97), and Erin Collins (L ’06) were each honored during a gala ceremony at the Hilton Charlotte Center City in Charlotte on Thursday, Nov. 14.
The Women of Justice Awards annually recognize women across the state of North Carolina who have demonstrated leadership, integrity, service, sacrifice, and accomplishment in improving the quality of justice and exemplifying the highest ideals of the legal profession.
Freshwater-Smith, who serves as a Senior Assistant District Attorney for the Seventh Prosecutorial District of North Carolina, and Stansell, an Assistant Public Defender with the Wake County Public Defender’s Office, both received the Public Service Practitioner Award. The award is given to women government and non-profit lawyers.
Britton, from Britton Law in Fayetteville, collected the Litigation Practitioner Award, which is given to women litigation practitioners.
Brewer, of Brooks, Stevens & Pope in Raleigh, was awarded the Business Practitioner Award, which is given to women business practitioners.
Collins, from Hedrick, Gardner, Kincheloe & Garofalo in Wilmington, received the Rising Star Award. The award is given to women lawyers 40 years old and younger or within the first 10 years of practice who have already made a difference in the justice system or the profession and who appear on a path toward even greater accomplishment.
In 2012, Campbell Law Professor Melissa Essary and alumnae Shelby Benton (L ’85) and Kimberly Miller (L ’07) received the Women of Justice Award.
