RALEIGH, N.C. – November 8 marked a historic day at Campbell Law School as the first all-North Carolina Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals panel of judges heard oral arguments at the school. 2010 marked the first year since the Court’s establishment in 1891 that North Carolina has had three judges sitting simultaneously on the court.
“Campbell Law was honored to host this session of the Fourth Circuit,” said Dean Melissa Essary. “It was a privilege to welcome these esteemed judges as our guests in these historic hearings with three natives of our state presiding together for the first time, and to provide this wonderful educational opportunity for our community to witness justice in action.”
Hearing cases in insurance law, civil rights and civil matters, Judges Albert Diaz, Allyson Duncan, and James Wynn Jr. represented the Fourth Circuit, which consists of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, at the North Carolina Business Court at Campbell Law. More than 75 Campbell Law students, staff, faculty and federal officials attended the event.
Judge Diaz has practiced law in the state since 1988 and was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by President Obama in 2009.
Born in nearby Durham, N.C., and a graduate of Duke University School of Law, Judge Duncan was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by President George W. Bush in 2003.
Born in Robersonville, N.C., Judge Wynn has worked as a JAG corps captain for the U.S. Navy and as an associate justice for the Supreme Court of North Carolina. He was nominated by President Barack Obama to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 2009.
