Dr. Edward Fubara, director of the Master of Business Administration program at Campbell University’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, has received the Extension Engagement and Economic Development Award of Excellence from the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC). The SBTDC is administered by North Carolina State University on behalf of the University of North Carolina System and operated in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The Extension Engagement and Economic Development Award recognizes exemplary leadership in business development among those who partner with the SBTDC to deliver small business services.
“I really accepted the award on behalf of the MBA program faculty, staff and students,” Fubara said. “They did the real work. In my opinion the award highlights the significant role universities and students can play in economic development. Our students were able to create real value for these business people by applying the tools that they have picked up in our classrooms. In turn, the students’ learning is solidified and they pick up practical real-world lessons in the process. It’s truly a win-win situation.”
Campbell MBA students took both first and second place in this year’s Graduate Business Student Competition sponsored by the SBTDC, a state-wide competition designed to give students the opportunity to work with actual client companies and compete with other students for prize money. However, most of the activities connected with the SBTDC award are not competitions, but learning opportunities in which students supplement their classroom activities with real-world experience.
“I am encouraged to continue making these connections with the business community so students can take advantage of these real-world opportunities,” Fubara said. “In this season when businesses are struggling and major employers are laying people off, more and more people are recognizing the value of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills. Students who are exposed to entrepreneurial ventures come to recognize that there are more career options available to them than the traditional nine-to-five.”
Dr. Fubara, who is a member of the SBTDC Advisory Board, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Benin in Nigeria. He earned his MBA and Ph.D. from Michigan State University.
