BUIES CREEK-Nine students from across the Triangle succeeded in a 24-hour crash course in “Getting the Edge for the S.A.T. “at Campbell University.
The students included a 13-year-old student who is taught at home and high school juniors from the Raleigh area.
“The students had an intense workshop in using their senses and integrating lyrical writing into their prose,” explained Proffesor Nate Salsbury who joined colleague Michael Ray Smith to teach the May 15-16 workshop.
The students loved the work and praised the camp.
“You guys are awesome at writing and teaching,” wrote one student in her evaluation following the camp.
Another wrote, “I enjoyed coming to this writing camp and learning how to use my ‘five senses.’ If it wasn’t for this camp, I could probably never reach this far of becoming something great.”
The students arrived Friday afternoon, learned about using observation in their writing, had dinner, worked out and enjoyed a film night. Saturday included an intensive track of publishing their work and learning about poetry and other lyrical qualities of writing.
Two Campbell University students supervised the campers. The workshop ended in a banquet where the best work received prizes donated by Nick McKay of Barnes and Noble in Buies Creek. All the students received certificates and a copy of the publication that they produced.
