RALEIGH – Campbell Law School’s Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA) executive board members have chosen Gladys Sanchez ’24 as the recipient of this year’s Alondra Bribiesca Scholarship.
The summer scholarship is intended for “a student who has exemplified courage in the face of adversity,” a trait exemplified by the scholarship namesake, Alondra Bribiesca ‘20. Students who apply for the scholarship have to write an essay explaining what they can do to make Campbell Law a more inclusive place. “We picked Gladys because the essay she provided really stood out to the entire HLSA E-Board as relatable,” said HLSA President Paulina De Leon ’23.
In her essay, Sanchez wrote that being authentic to herself and her culture was the best way to make places inclusive. De Leon added the board recognized that sometimes being ourselves is the best way to show others that it is natural and okay for them to be themselves.
“This will allow for an inclusive environment where everyone can feel welcomed and understood, even if we are all different in our own unique ways,” she explained. “Embracing cultural diversity means appreciating the differences in individuals from a variety of cultural and ethnic groups within an organization. It also means embracing diversity and appreciating people of different religions, cultures, ethnic and socio-economic groups.”
Sanchez, who will serve as the secretary for HLSA’s next executive board, said being selected as the recipient of the Alondra Bribiesca Scholarship is a great honor.
“I was very excited to learn that my response to the application resonated with the selection committee and that they believed I would continue making a mark as a student at Campbell Law,” she said.
Following her selection for the scholarship, the HLSA executive board took Sanchez out to dinner, where she got the chance to meet and talk to Bribiesca.
