Buies Creek, N.C.–The masterworks of George Frideric Handel and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be featured in the Campbell University Choral Society concert held Sunday, April 20, at 4 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the Taylor Bott Rodgers Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
“O Sing Unto the Lord” (Chandos Anthem) by Handel and “Vesperae Solennes de Confessore”(The Solemn Vespers) by Mozart are sacred works of the Baroque and Classical periods.
Based on Psalm 96, “O Sing unto the Lord” features soprano soloist Bethany Hailey, the music teacher at Boone Trail Elementary School in Harnett County, and tenor Robert Garver, a Campbell alumnus who is currently director of music at Apex United Methodist Church.
The Mozart “Vespers” includes a solo quartet, a favorite practice of the classical period, as well as a soprano solo. Joining Hailey and Garver as members of the quartet are mezzo-soprano Susan Morrow and bass Greg Honeycutt. Morrow is on the music faculty of the Coats-Erwin Middle School and Honeycutt teaches voice and music courses at Wake Technical Community College.
“Both of these works are uplifting and quite challenging,” said Dr. Phillip Morrow, conductor of the Choral Society. “Both works are wonderful examples of the superb compositional craft of Handel and Mozart. It is exciting music, communicative of praise and reverence for Almighty God.”
