Harnett County educator honored by Campbell University

Buies Creek–Hewitt “Buddy” Brown, a veteran educator in both Cumberland and Harnett counties, was named a Distinguished History Alumnus of Campbell University at the Government and History Distinguished Alumnus brunch held Saturday, Oct. 20 at the University’s Homecoming event.Born in 1943 at Fort Liberty, N.C., Brown graduated from Buies Creek High School in 1961 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in social studies from Campbell College in 1966. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in School Administration from East Carolina University and an Education Specialist degree from Campbell.Brown’s career as an educator spanned over 30 years. During that time he served as a social studies/English teacher at both Dunn High and Spring Lake Junior High schools and as an assistant principal at South View Junior High and Douglas Byrd High schools. Brown also served as athletic director at Douglas Byrd. “I think this is quite an honor,” Brown said of the award. “I really appreciate it because my family has been in this area for 200 years, and I have to give honor to my ancestors who, had it not been for their contributions to this school and this community, I wouldn’t be here today.”Brown is a member of the Buies Creek First Baptist Church, the Sons of the 42 “Rainbow” Division, the Harnett County Historical Society, the Harnett County Historical Society Foundation Board of Directors, the Buies Creek Historical Society and he volunteers at the Averasboro Battlefield Museum.A lifelong student of Harnett County history, Brown is the author of a collection of articles dealing with the history of Buies Creek and Harnett County.Photo Copy: Hewitt “Buddy” Brown, left, receives the Distinguished Alumnus award from Dr. James Martin, chair of the Department of Government, History and Justice at Campbell University.
