Harvey to receive Leadership Scholar Award

RALEIGH, N.C. – Incoming first-year student Tommy Harvey III has been selected to receive the Leadership Scholar Award from Campbell Law School. The award is one of three highly prestigious, full-tuition awards.

The Leadership Scholar Award keeps with the law school’s efforts to educate graduates who will become effective advocates and leaders for legal and social justice. Established prior to the 2014-15 academic year, the scholarship annually recognizes one incoming law student who has demonstrated leadership skills and the potential to become a leader in the law.

“Receiving the Leadership Scholar Award from Campbell Law has been the ultimate blessing for myself and my family,” said Harvey. “My hope is to utilize the award to fully harness my talents and abilities to make a world-changing impact through the law profession for years to come.”

A native of Tyrone, Georgia, Harvey is a recent graduate of the University of Miami where he was the recipient of the Hammond Scholarship, and a member of both the General Honors Program and honor council. No stranger to taking leadership positions, he has served as a tutor for children and volunteered with multiple service learning initiatives. An engaged member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Harvey served as president of the Omicron Delta chapter for two years, as well as a state and district representative to the national office. During his leadership tenure his chapter received accolades for academic achievement and was named both district and state undergraduate chapter of the year. As a senior the fraternity named Harvey its Undergraduate Omega Man of the Year for the state of Florida.

Harvey follows in the footsteps of his mother, Wilhelmenia DeVone-Harvey, who graduated from Campbell Law in 1990.

An internal search committee comprised of leadership experience from within the Campbell Law community interviewed an impressive slate of eight finalists and ultimately selected Harvey for the award. Professor Melissa Essary, who served as dean of the law school from 2006-12, led the committee alongside Judge Donna Stroud (L ’88) and Thomas Walker (L ’90). Judge Stroud serves on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and Walker was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

“Campbell Law has a proud tradition of graduating leaders in the community and practice of law,” said Walker. “From the beginning of Tommy’s interview it was evident that he fits the mold of a Campbell lawyer. I have no doubt that he will be a leader on campus as a student, and he will carry that banner into the community and profession once he graduates and passes the bar exam.”
