High school students learn about careers in medicine and pharmacy

Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences is hosting Careers Associated with Medicine and Pharmacy (CAMP) June 20-23.

Twenty-one local and out of state high school students are exploring career choices such as pharmaceutical scientist, pharmacist, physician assistant and doctor of osteopathic medicine during the four day program.

“I’ve always considered becoming a pharmacist so I attended to learn more about the profession,” said Evan Lucas, who is a rising junior from Wilmington, N.C. “The labs are excellent, you really learn more when you have an interactive experience.”

Labs are held daily to provide hands-on learning. Students have the opportunity to apply a protective coat to tablets, check blood pressure and reflexes, provide practice injections, produce non-medicated troches and much more. CAMP is offered through the College’s Science Education Outreach program which exposes middle and high school students to various careers in science. Another effort of the program works to enhance teaching methods for middle and high school teachers.

“I am interested in animal science so I wanted to come to CAMP to broaden my horizons,” says Seraphina Wong, a rising sophomore from Buies Creek, N.C. “I really enjoyed learning about the Physician Assistant program and being exposed to something different.”
