Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine announces Gina Miller, DO as the first fellow to complete the Sports Medicine Fellowship.
“Dr. Miller has been no stranger to firsts,” shared Dr. Andrew Martin, director of the fellowship at Campbell. “She was in the first medical school class at LMU-DCOM; she was in the first Family Medicine Residency class in Morganton, NC; and is now the first to complete the CUSOM Sports Medicine Fellowship and will be the first sports medicine physician in Stigler, Oklahoma. We are confident Dr. Miller will do well in her career.”
Two primary aspects of the Sports Medicine Fellowship are treating Campbell University athletes in the University Health Center and on the playing fields along with university athletic trainers.
“As expected, Campbell has proven to be an outstanding environment to train physicians in the area of sports medicine,” reflected Martin. “With its large Division I student athlete population and active community, it has been a great inaugural year for our program at Campbell.”
“The athletes responded well to Dr. Miller and seemed to enjoy working with her,” said Jackie Knight, head athletic trainer at Campbell. “She always went over and above for us even when the hours were crazy. I never heard her complain or question what she was doing, and she communicated well with my staff and I. We are definitely going to miss her!”
Beyond treating Campbell athletes this year, the fellowship provided physician care at other area sporting events including the Beach to Battleship Triathlon in Wilmington, Fort Liberty Marathon, and the NCAA D-1 Men’s Soccer Final Four Championship in Cary.
As a board certified family physician, Dr. Miller also treated many patients at the CU Health Center as part of the fellowship, and before returning to her home state of Oklahoma to practice family medicine and sports medicine, she went on a mission trip to Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition to providing healthcare to athletes and the community, fellows participate in research and teaching at CUSOM.
“We presented research and case presentations at national and regional conferences including VCOM, AOASM, and ACSM, and hosted the AOASM South Eastern Student Conference with the CUSOM Sports Medicine Club,” said Miller.
Dr. Miller assisted in teaching osteopathic manipulative medicine as part of the fellowship program. “She was a reliable and consistent table trainer in the OMM lab,” shared Dr. William F. Morris, founding chair of osteopathic manipulative medicine at Campbell. “The student evaluations affirmed she was an excellent trainer; we were fortunate to have her in the lab – she is an excellent osteopathic physician!”
The sports medicine fellowship welcomes the next Campbell Fellow, Dr. Mathew Heller, this month. “Dr. Heller joins us from Central Long Island, New York,” said Dr. Martin. “A graduate from NYITCOM, he completed his family medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY. Dr. Heller is also trained as an EMS/Firefighter and has served as a ring side physician for USA Boxing, so we are excited about all of the skills and experience he brings with him and look forward to continuing his training here at Campbell.”
“We are extremely proud of Dr. Miller,” said Dean John Kauffman. “She was an ideal inaugural fellow who exemplifies the CUSOM mission to provide healthcare to rural and underserved communities like Stigler, Oklahoma. We look forward to Dr. Heller and all of the future CUSOM fellows continuing to fulfill this legacy.”
