Dear Campbell Community,
Today marks the start of our first-ever #CampbellFoundersWeek. Yes, we’ve held Founders Day services or events in the past. But nothing like this. This is a week full of activities and events designed to celebrate Campbell University and its founding in 1887 — and to honor the people who made this school possible. Those people include, perhaps most notably, our Founding President J.A. Campbell.
So for our inaugural Founders Week, expect to see a lot of our first president and our namesake. For example, we open our #CampbellFoundersWeek events Tuesday, Feb. 3, with a J.A. Campbell Look-A-Like Contest, and we close the week with a statue unveiling of J.A. Campbell at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, in front of Kivett.
In between, on Wednesday, we’ll hold our first #CampbellDay — a national holiday of sorts for Campbell University. Our 64-second, you-will-definitely-want-to-watch-this whimsical video explains the day:
We have numerous other activities and opportunities planned this week that are open to all students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. We present those below in our list “10 things to do during#CampbellFoundersWeek.” We invite you to participate in as many as you can. Just click on the links throughout the list if you want more details.
We hope you enjoy #CampbellFoundersWeek as much as we have enjoyed planning it. Here’s to our next 128 years!
Thank you for your support; and, as always, #CampbellProud!
Signed,
#CampbellFoundersWeek Planning Committee*
10 things to do during #CampbellFoundersWeek
1.) Dress like J.A. Campbell and attend the @GoCamelsMBB Founders Week Game. First 1,887 get a free Gaylord bobblehead. (Tuesday; Gore Arena; Game time at 7 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m.)
2.) Show your Campbell pride and participate in #CampbellDay. Do 1, 2, or 3 of these things: wear orange, share why you’re #CampbellProud on social media, and/or make a gift of at least $18.87 to support student scholarships. (Wednesday, anywhere, all day)
3.) Fill up on hopping Johns and other popular foods served on campus throughout our 128-year history. (Thursday, Marshbanks, lunch and dinner hours)
4.) Snoop through J.A. Campbell’s personal diaries and flip through old yearbooks at the “Blast from the Past” museum-like exhibit. (Thursday; Marshbanks’ President’s Dining Room; 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.)
5.) Test your knowledge about the university’s history (and win prizes) during CAB’s Founders Week’s Scavenger Hunt. Or, take our 10-question online quiz “How well do you know Campbell University?” (Scavenger Hunt: Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., follow CAB’s Twitter and Facebook account for questions and clues)
6.) Eat a birthday cupcake and get a Founders Week T-shirt at the unveiling ceremony for our newest campus landmark: the J.A. Campbell statue. (Friday, Kivett, 3 p.m.)
7.) Get a photo with all four of our university presidents. We’ll have life-size cutouts of each on display throughout the week. (Tuesday, Founders Week Game, Gore Arena, 7 p.m.; Thursday, Marshbanks’ President’s Dining Room, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.)
8.) Take a selfie with “J.A. Campbell” when you spot him (well, our student actor portraying him) at selected events throughout the week. (Tuesday, Founders Week Game; around campus on Wednesday, or#CampbellDay; and Thursday, “Blast from the Past” exhibit)
9.) Follow @JACampbell1887 on Twitter and Instagram to get an idea on what (we think) Founding President J.A. Campbell would post on social media if this were 1887-1934. (Follow here and here)
10.) Help us spread the word about #CampbellDay and support our Thunderclap campaign. (What’s Thunderclap? We explain here.)
