RALEIGH, N.C. –North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Paul M. Newby, a Campbell Law adjunct faculty member, received the 2012 John McNeill Smith Jr. Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section Award from the North Carolina Bar Association (NC Bar) on Friday, April 27. The award was presented at the section’s annual meeting and continuing legal education event by section chair Chuck Kitchen.
Justice Newby teaches State Constitutional Law at Campbell Law School.
Justice Newby serves as co-author of “The North Carolina State Constitution with History and Commentary(2nd ed.),” which is set for release this year. The book marks the only text exclusively dedicated to the North Carolina Constitution.
Justice Newby began his professional career with the Van Winkle law firm in Asheville, and then served as vice president and general counsel of Cannon Mills Realty and Development Corporation in Kannapolis. Making his move to Raleigh, Newby served 19 years as Assistant U.S. Attorney before joining the North Carolina Supreme Court.
A native of Asheboro, Justice Newby earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University (magna cum laude) and law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
The John McNeill Smith Jr. Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section Award was established by the section “to honor a person who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the ideals embodied in the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of North Carolina.”
