RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Bar Association recently honored Justice Paul. M. Newby, an adjunct professor at the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, as a 2011 recipient of the NCBA Citizen Lawyer Award. The award was presented at the NCBA Annual Meeting in Asheville.

Newby has served on the North Carolina Supreme Court since 2004.
Justice Newby is active with the North Carolina Bar Association, having served as Vice President. Currently he participates on the Litigation Council, Technology Advisory Committee, International Law Section Council, and Law-Related Education Committee. He was selected as a delegate for the Bar Association’s Attorney Exchange Program with Turkey. Being a strong proponent of civic education, Justice Newby makes frequent presentations to school groups and civic organizations.
Justice Newby is an Eagle Scout and serves as Scoutmaster Emeritus of Troop 11 and as a board member of Occoneechee Council. He is the recipient of the Heroism Award for rescuing nine people from a riptide, of the God and Service Award, and of the Silver Beaver Award. In 2010, Justice Newby was named Scouter of the Year for his coordination of Scouting’s state-wide Report to the State, recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
The NCBA Citizen Lawyer Award was established in 2007 to recognize lawyers who provide exemplary public service to their communities. Honorees include elected and appointed government officials, coaches, mentors and voluntary leaders of non-profit, civic and community organizations.
