Buies Creek, N.C.—Chelsea B. Sumner, of Raleigh, N.C. is the recipient of the J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Memorial full scholarship to Campbell University. Sumner is a senior at Knightdale High School.
Sumner, who has a love of science, would like to major in chemistry and Public Health Administrationas an undergraduate. She would also like to continue her studies doing post graduate work.
“It is my desire to attend pharmacy school to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, as well as a Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences specializing in either neuroscience or pediatrics.”
In March 2010, Sumer participated in the annual Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition in which students from 14 different countries, including Australia, Germany, Korea, New Zealand and Malaysia, presented their work to Chinese students. Sumner also pushed for an AP chemistry class at her high school, and, through her hard work and that of several fellow students, Knightdale High School was able to offer the class for the first time this academic year.
“I have learned that nothing is impossible because if you really want it, you’ll do everything in your power to achieve it,” Sumner said.
Sumner said she is happy about be accepted to Campbell because Campbell provides the option to prepare for pharmacy school through a special undergraduate program. “By attending Campbell University, I will be afforded the opportunity to prepare for pharmacy school and to pursue my goals,” she said.
Sumner has a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 and is ranked second in her class at Knightdale High School. She is the daughter of Reginald and Beatrice Sumner.
The J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Memorial Scholarship
Former trustees of Campbell University, J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland wanted to establish a fund to further Christian higher education. A successful entrepreneur, J. Hunter Strickland was an alumnus of Campbell. The first full J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Scholarship competition was held in the 1993-1994 academic year. There have been fourteen students to receive the full, four-year scholarship that includes tuition, housing, meals, textbooks and parking.
Chelsea Sumner is the 15th recipient of the scholarship award.
