Law professor to serve on governor’s crime commission

RALEIGH – Campbell Law professor Jon Powell has been appointed to the juvenile planning committee of Gov. Bev Perdue’s crime commission, Melissa Essary, dean of the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law, announced this week.
As a committee member, Powell will be responsible for advising Perdue on all issues of juvenile crime across the state as well as determining where federal dollars should go to sponsor programs to address these issues. Powell was recommended to the governor for the committee by Linda Hayes, secretary of the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Powell is the director of the Juvenile Justice Project at Campbell’s law school.
“We are proud to have Professor Jon Powell appointed to serve on the juvenile planning committee for the Governor’s Crime Commission,” Essary said. “Through his works with such causes as the Juvenile Justice Project, he is an exemplary ambassador for our school locally and even globally in the restorative justice movement.”
Powell said he was honored to receive the appointment.
“I’m excited to move forward working with the crime committee on juvenile justice issues,” he said.
