Lawrence ‘humbled’ by Cherished Camel staff award

Nancy Lawrence, assistant dean of administration for the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine, is one of five recipients of the Cherished Camel Award, presented to her in a surprise reception on Thursday.

The award is a new initiative by Dr. William Downs — who became Campbell University’s sixth president on July 1 — to regularly recognize “exceptional performance” by Campbell staff and to “promote excellence and provide visible university-wide appreciation of employees who demonstrate daily dedication, initiative and productivity.” Five recipients were chosen to receive the award in the last two weeks out of more than 60 nominations.

Joining Lawrence as the first Cherished Camels so far have been Vanessa Jackson from the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law, Ben Severin from Financial Aid and Carla Danks from the College of Arts & Sciences.

In presenting the award on Thursday, Downs called Lawrence “an integral part of the med school and the dean’s office.” Reading from the nomination letter, he said, “She’s always been pleasant and always been friendly, making sure those who interact with the [medical school] feel special and welcome. As part of the senior management team, she helps keep the department running smoothly by taking care of the administrative and business operations.”

“She sounds like a model employee and a model Cherished Camel,” Downs added.

Lawrence was nominated by Human Resources Specialist Amy Emory.

“I am grateful for and blessed by everyone I work with each day,” Lawrence said. “I am truly humbled and honored by this recognition.”

Lawrence joined the medical school in 2012. She received her Bachelor of Science from East Carolina University and her Master of Education from Campbell.
