RALEIGH, N.C. – Lori Feezor (’89) was honored Friday, April 15, as the seventh recipient of the Health Law Section’s Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented during the section’s annual meeting at the N.C. Bar Center “in recognition of her lifelong achievements and outstanding contributions to health law, and her exemplary service to health care professionals, the bar and the general public.”
Ms. Feezor, who served as chair of the Health Law Section in 2007-08, serves as general counsel for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
“I was incredibly humbled to receive this award,” said Ms. Feezor. “I certainly could think of a dozen or more health attorneys who were more worthy of that award. Just to know that your peers respect your work and think enough of you to give you that sort of accolade was very humbling.”
Ms. Feezor is a native of Connecticut who grew up in San Diego. Her family relocated to the Asheville area when she was a teenager. She is a 1986 graduate of Western Carolina University and a 1989 graduate of the Campbell University School of Law.
Her law career began in Greenville, and shortly thereafter she transitioned into the health law field.
“I started out with (NCBA Past-President) Mike Colombo’s firm and practiced there for a few years,” she recalled. “One of the clients I picked up was the hospital, back at the time when it was just Pitt Memorial.”
From there Ms. Feezor went on to work at Duke University, where she was chief compliance officer, and ultimately settled in Wilmington where she has been for five years.
The Health Law Section’s Distinguished Service Award has been presented only six times since it was established in 1993. Previous recipients are Roddey M. Ligon Jr. (1993), John Anderson Jr. (1995), Wendell H. Ott (1996), John G. Shaw (2003), Leighton P. Roper III (2008) and Sam Southern (2010).
