Buies Creek, N.C.—Former Campbell Dean of Students Phil Melvin delivered the semester’s final lecture at the university’s Lunch and Learn program, on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Sponsored by the department of Government, History and Justice, Lunch and Learn meets twice a month in Marshbanks Cafeteria and provides students with a unique learning opportunity. Melvin’s presentation focused on the Battle off Samar in the Philippines during World War II., one of the last great naval battles in world history.
Other presentations during the semester have focused on domestic violence, European perceptions of the presidential race, the early founders of the first St. David’s Society in South Carolina and an analysis of post general election results.
Lunch and Learn was initiated in 1994 by Dr. James Martin, chairman of the department of Government, History and Justice and is currently directed by Dr. Lloyd Johnson, professor of history.
“Lunch and Learn has been very well-attended this year,” said Johnson. “We’ve had a variety of speakers, even a political scientist from the Netherlands. I think students come not only for extra credit but for their interest in current affairs such as the election.”
Wednesday’s presenter, Phillip Melvin, is a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel who holds a master’s degree in Asian Studies and was a detachment commander in Japan. He served as Dean of Student Life at Campbell University from 1987- 2000 and is currently an adjunct professor of history at Campbell.
