A Maryland woman was Campbell University’s first student to attend a prestigious journalism program in the heart of New York City. Jessica Beall, a mass communication student, attended an intense three-week program of study at World Journalism Institute (WJI) on the campus of King’s College in Manhattan. Beall is studying journalism at Campbell and works for the award-winning Campbell Times newspaper. “I’m excited and honored that I was given the opportunity to be a part of the program,” Beall said. “I’ve never experienced anything like this before, but I know that the rewards will definitely be worth the effort.” Beall competed with students across the nation for a spot in the group of a just more than a dozen students. She studied with some of the best journalists in the nation including Indianapolis editor Russ Pulliam and scholar Robert Case, director of WJI. “This program is intense,” noted Dr. Michael Ray Smith, chair of the Department of Mass Communication. “Jessica worked on assignments in preparation for the work that she will do this summer. New York is considered the capital of the world for news and Jessica experienced first-hand the furious pace of a journalist on the move in the commercial heart of the richest country in the world.” WJI provides training for the next generation of journalists by offering training in New York City, the Washington, D.C., area and Los Angeles. The program is competitive and only the best students are accepted. Those that excel are eligible for a paid internship. Jessica Beall is one of 130 students in Campbell’s mass communication program.
