Matthew Alexander joins Campbell Law as new director of externships

RALEIGH – Campbell Law School welcomes Matthew J. Alexander, who joined the Office of Career and Professional Development as Director of Externships on April 7, 2025, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced.   

In his new role, Alexander will oversee the teaching and administration of the law school’s comprehensive externship program throughout the year – fall, spring and summer. Campbell Law’s Externship Program is well developed, with more than 150 sites. 

The director provides oversight of field placements for academic credit, ensuring the compliance of American Bar Association (ABA) accrediting standards and regularly teaches in the classroom and other related workshops.  He will also work closely with the rest of the Career Center staff to fulfill the functions of the center such as organizing special programs, counseling diverse students and alumni and forming and maintaining relationships with potential employers.  

Alexander has extensive experience in both private practice and public service including roles as a partner at AmLaw-ranked law firms and as a federal government enforcement attorney.

Prior to joining Campbell Law, Alexander practiced as a partner and associate in the Washington, D.C., offices of several leading global law firms, where he focused on white-collar criminal and civil defense, internal and government-facing investigations and corporate compliance matters. In these roles, he worked extensively with public and private companies, executives and boards of directors across numerous industries, both domestically and around the world. He also previously served as a member of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement in Washington, D.C., where he investigated violations of federal securities laws. Alexander earned his JD from Georgetown University Law Center and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame.
