Well-known sports figure and humanitarian H. Jack Mattox, of Ringgold, Ga., was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Campbell University on Oct. 21 during the university’s Homecoming events. Mattox, who is a 1951 graduate of Campbell, played fullback on the Fighting Camels football team from 1949-1951 and was co-captain of the team in 1950. He also played third base on the baseball team. Best-known for his humanitarian efforts, Mattox entered professional life as a teacher and coach, but was soon asked to create a Recreation Department for Catoosa County, Ga., and became its director in 1974. During his 30-year career as recreation director, Mattox was able to combine his love of athletics with his desire to act as an advocate for youth, implementing numerous improvement projects dealing with athletics throughout the county and organizing the county’s first Special Olympics events. In addition, Mattox started a summer camp for disadvantaged children, providing scholarships and transportation for those in need. He was presented the prestigious Jefferson Award by the American Institute for Public Service. Mattox is a member of the Chattanooga Area Sports Hall of Fame and a charitable foundation which he organized sponsors an annual golf tournament which benefits several charities. He is married to the former Nina Silvers of Ringgold. They are the parents of a daughter Alicia Burke. They have two grandchildren.Photo Copy: H.
