BUIES CREEK — The Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine, through partnership with Southeastern Health, has been approved for its first two residency programs — a 24-position family medicine and a 39-position internal medicine residency program.
Both programs have received full accreditation status from the American Osteopathic Association and will begin accepting applications in fall 2014. The programs will commence on July 1, 2015. Dr. Donald Morando has been appointed program director for the family medicine residency program, and Dr. Pranav Jain was selected as program director for the internal medicine residency program.
“These are the first two residency programs for both the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Southeastern Health,” said Dr. Robert Hasty, Southeastern Health vice president of medical education and regional associate dean and chairman of the Graduate Medical Education Committee for CUSOM. “We are excited for their approval.”
CUSOM has committed to developing residency programs around the state for its graduates, especially in hospitals positioned to meet the needs of rural and underserved communities. According to the National Rural Health Association, 75 percent of residency graduates from rural programs will practice in rural locations.
“The establishment of these residencies represents the first of many new programs that CUSOM is developing to advance the mission of educating and preparing osteopathic physicians to care for the rural and underserved populations in North Carolina, the Southeastern United States and the nation,” Hasty said.
