Med School’s Community Field Day a success

The School of Osteopathic Medicine’s Pediatric Medicine Club, Sports Medicine Club and Preventative Medicine and Health Education Club hosted a Community Field Day to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in a fun environment.

All Harnett County elementary school students were invited to attend.

“We wanted to teach the kids — and parents — how fun it can be to lead an active life and that it’s really not hard to have healthy eating habits,” said second-year med student Lauren Brown, president of the Pediatrics Club. “We wanted to teach the importance of good nutrition and provide some fun and active games for attendees to participate in. While this was a children’s event, there were many opportunities for parents to ask us questions, and we also provided them with pamphlets on healthy and budget friendly meal ideas.”

Activities included bounce houses, a scooter game, hula hoops, face painting, soccer, a game of four square, chalk painting and a healthy snack bar including a build-your-own fruit kabobs station.

While all of the activities were fun, an educational skit with Mr. French Fry and Ms. Salad was the favorite of both attendees and the medical students.

“We had about 60 local children and their parents participate in the event.  They had a lot of fun, and they were able to learn something new in a fun way,” said Brown. “The American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians selected Campbell Med as the Chapter of the Month in December for co-hosting the event. It is exciting to be recognized nationally and to have connected with the kids in our community. We can’t wait to make it bigger and better next year.”
