BUIES CREEK – Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine announced the promotion of three faculty members last week: Dr. Bruce W Newton, Chair of Anatomy; Dr. Lisa R. Chun, Co-Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; and Dr. Robin King-Thiele, Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs.
“Dr. Newton has played a key role in the Anatomy department since he joined the CUSOM faculty in July 2013,” said dean of the medical school, Dr. John Kauffman. “His leadership will continue to foster strength and innovation in our anatomy classroom instruction as well as in the lab.”
Bruce W Newton, PhD earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA and a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. He conducted post-doctoral work in Neurobiology at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Prior to joining CUSOM, Dr. Newton served as the Director, Division of Anatomical Education, Professor of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences, and Professor of Educational Development at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is Professor of Anatomy for CUSOM and currently serves as the Vice-President of the International Association of Medical Science educators (IAMSE).
“We were pleased to welcome Dr. Chun to the CUSOM faculty last fall and her contributions to the osteopathic manipulative medicine department made this promotion a natural next step,” Dr. Kauffman said. “Dr. Chun’s work with Dr. Morris and our students regarding the osteopathic profession is one of unique strengths of our medical school.”
Lisa R. Chun, DO, MS MEdL, FNAOME is Associate Professor in the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and will now also serve as Co-Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. A graduate of the New York Institute of Technology-New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York, she served as both a teaching assistant and pre-doctoral teaching fellow in osteopathic manipulative medicine. Dr. Chun graduated from the inaugural Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx where she also served as chief resident. She is specialty board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM) and entered academic medicine after over 17 years in private practice in order to help provide quality osteopathic medical education and clinical patient care. She is a national faculty member in NMM/OMM at the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
“Dr. King-Thiele has played an invaluable role as Regional Assistant Dean,” said Dean Kauffman. “ And we look forward to her continued efforts in regard to clinical rotations for our MS-III and MS-IV students.”
Dr. King-Thiele has dual board certification from AOBIM in Internal Medicine and Hospice/Palliative Medicine with 16 years of clinical experience that includes wound care, hyperbaric, hospice, hospitalist, outpatient, ER, and teaching. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Marshall University and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. King-Thiele joined the founding CUSOM faculty in 2012 as Clinical Associate Professor, Chair of Internal Medicine, and Director of Foundations in Medical Practice Evidence Based Medicine. She also serves as the Director of Medical Education at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton, NC, is an Emergency Medicine Specialists for Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC, and has had alternating directorship responsibilities for 3HC of Goldsboro, NC since 2005. She is Hyperbaric Certified, ACLS/BLS-recertified, and Credentialed for Central Venous Access, Intubation and is a Fellow in the Academy of the College of Internal Medicine ( FACOI). She is Board Certified Internal Medicine 1998, Recertified 2008; Board Certified Hospice/Palliative Medicine 2011 and Hyperbaric Medicine. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Internists, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and the NC Osteopathic Association.
