Military scholar, author and former VMI superintendent to speak at Campbell

General Josiah Bunting III, author of the Vietnam War novel, “The Lionheads,” voted one of the ten best novels of 1973 by “Time Magazine,” will be the featured speaker at Campbell University’s Anne T. Moore Humanities Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Government, History and Justice. Free and open to the public, the lecture will be held Tuesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Bunting, the superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute from 1995 until 2003, is a lifelong educator who graduated from VMI in 1963 and was awarded a Rhodes scholarship. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oxford University, where he was president of the American Students Association. He also served as headmaster of the Lawrenceville School, Hampden-Sydney College and Briarcliff College. Bunting entered the U.S. Army in 1966, reaching the rank of Major serving in Vietnam and at West Point, where he was an assistant professor of history and social sciences. An accomplished author, his book “The Lionheads” has been translated into 15 languages. His third novel, “An Education for Our Time,” outlines a series of letters and will provisions of a dying billionaire for a new, ideal college. It was a main selection of the Conservative Book Club. Bunting is president of the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation in New York and chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. His last published book is a biography of Ulysses S. Grant, and he is currently at work on a biography of General George C. Marshall. As the 13th superintendent of VMI, Bunting was commissioned as a Major General in the Virginia Militia. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 2002. Bunting will speak on America leadership during World War II, with some focus on Marshall and Roosevelt.
