MLK Week of Service events this week

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – This week marks the 10th annual time of service dedicated in honor of the legacy left by Martin Luther King Jr. Students will have the opportunity to give back to both the local community as well as possibly save the lives of people all across the nation.

Students can partner with associate professor of biology Michael Larsen and his environmental science classes in “Cleaning the Park” while also taking the time to donate blood and register to vote.

“We want students to understand that we are being the hands and feet of Christ in the community,” said Campbell’s community engagement coordinator Abbi Davis. “Whether that means picking up trash on the side of the road or possibly helping someone have a healthier life, that community engagement reaches all areas.”

Students also have the chance to potentially save a life by registering as a bone marrow donor. Those interested can donate to “Delete Blood Cancer” as well as register to donate bone marrow in the Rumley Center on Wednesday. Registering to donate bone marrow should take about five minutes and does not bind the student in anyway to donate bone marrow if a match is selected in the future — this is only saying the student may be willing if it is needed, according to Davis.

“Since we are out of school, we now do not provide any opportunities actually the day of, but doing it throughout the week allows us to provide more opportunities and a wider variety,” said Davis. “We also encourage students to contact the office if they are looking for ways to be involved that we do not provide.  We are happy to get students involved throughout the semester with partners that best suit their gifts and calling.”
