New clinical research center opens at RTP campus

A new pharmaceutical research center has just opened to provide extended support for Campbell University Pharmacy students at the Research Triangle Park campus in the Raleigh/Durham area. “With its location near the biotechnology industry, the new research center will provide opportunities for research collaborations with industry partners as well as educational opportunities for Campbell University,” said Dr. Brenda Jamerson, associate professor of pharmacy and director of the RTP center. “In addition, it will facilitate partnerships with academic and medical institutions for the conduct of patient-oriented research.” The RTP facility currently serves as the data coordination center for a cardiac outcome study on 4,000 subjects but it is just getting started, said Jamerson. “Once we’ve established a track record, we’ll be able to pursue other research and professional opportunities,” she said. Campbell University’s Pharmacy program has always placed great emphasis on research. With the completion of the main campus research facility in 2001, the university was able to expand its research capabilities to include a number of new studies. Among others, Drs. Antoine Al-Achi and Robert Greenwood’s collaboration on a new delivery system of insulin that would be an alternative to insulin injections and Dr. Terri Hamrick’s study of a bacteria, often found in soil and water, and its effect on pregnant women and babies. A total of 112 students are enrolled in the Master of Clinical Research and the joint MSCR and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
