Buies Creek, N.C.—The pick-up trucks loaded with mattresses, futons and other necessities began arriving on the Campbell University campus on Friday, August 13. But Welcome Week, the action-packed, get to know everyone introduction to the University for students, didn’t officially start until Saturday, August 14.
New students began the week by moving into their residence halls on Saturday. A dinner was held for them in the John W. Pope Convocation Center later that day followed by a welcome party on the grounds of the Academic Circle.
Freshman students were invited to morning worship services at Butler Chapel on Sunday, August 15, and participated in New Student Convocation in which each new student received a medallion bearing the Campbell seal and signifying Campbell’s commitment to them.
Also scheduled was Camel 101, a seminar for freshmen featuring need-to- know information from experts on protecting property, controlling finances and developing effective study habits. The students were able to sample some Campbell night life with a special Blacklight Dance held Monday at 9 p.m. in the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Center.
Although classes began on Wednesday, August 18, many more events were planned for the week, including a Party in the Park featuring Mud Volleyball,water slides, food and entertainment; movies; and a concert in Turner Auditorium performed by the innovative Plastic MusikBand.
“We are excited about the return of our upper classmen and the arrival of the class of 2014,” said Director of Student Activities Chris O’Connor. “We’ve got a lot of things planned this week and for the coming year and I’m looking forward to getting everyone involved.”
