Nursing student makes history with prestigious scholarship

Nursing Program Manager, Yolanda and Bear in Smith Hall

Yolanda Palma Barrera became the first nursing student in Campbell history to receive a scholarship from the George B. Boland Trust Fund through the veteran’s organization known as the Forty & Eight.

This national organization has supported nurses training scholarships for decades. Yolanda was awarded $1,500 to support her journey in nursing, which is a testament to her dedication and to the growing impact of Campbell’s nursing program.

“This is the first, but it won’t be the last,” said E. P. “Bear” Hawley, sous directeur nationale for Nurses Training in Region 2, which includes North Carolina. “We are honored to invest in the future of nursing through students like Yolanda.”

About the Forty & Eight

La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux otherwise known as The Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses was founded in 1920 by Joseph W. Breen at American Legion Post 297 in Philadelphia, PA. Inspired by World War 1 French Boxcars, Breen and 16 other prominent Legionnaires envisioned an elite membership and camaraderie for leaders of the American Legion. The Forty & Eight is committed to charitable and patriotic arms.
