Pharmacy students continue to outperform national residency match rate

CPHS continues to hold highest private school residency match rate in North Carolina

Campbell student pharmacists continue to perform well above the national residency match rate. College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) students had a match rate of 80 percent for PGY1 residency programs, outperforming the national pharmacy residency match rate of approximately 63 percent.

Campbell continues to hold the highest private school residency match rate in the state of North Carolina. According to Byron May, chair and professor of pharmacy practice, 44 members of the graduating class will be completing post-graduate training, and eight members of the class of 2019 will be moving on to PGY2 residencies

“2020 was another great year for CPHS graduating students,” said May. “The success of our students is a testament to their hard work and preparation, and the commitment our faculty have in giving our students a competitive advantage. Our students have performed well above the national average for match percentage in a very competitive residency environment. Everyone in the Doctor of Pharmacy program is proud of the success our students continue to achieve.”

As a non-traditional student, obtaining a residency position seemed like a long shot to mother and military spouse Tera Jones. Jones, a PharmD candidate said, “I knew, that a PGY1 residency is what I wanted and needed after graduation as a way to continue learning, to challenge myself, precept/teach students, and develop myself in a clinical pharmacy role.

“After studying with some really great and supportive preceptors during my P4 year (many that were CPHS faculty), I made the decision to apply with their support and recommendations. My journey may have looked different than others, but the encouragement and help I received from CPHS, including the DeeM program, gave me the confidence to apply, interview and ultimately end up with an acute care PGY1 position that fits my personality and career goals.”

As a student who progressed through both MSCR and PharmD programs simultaneously, Benjamin Tutterow said, “Campbell’s faculty provided invaluable support throughout the residency process. During my year of clinical rotations, preceptors offered not only their professional expertise as teachers but also acted as mentors. Before officially matching with Cape Fear Valley, many of those same preceptors contacted me individually to provide further encouragement, which was such a simple but kind gesture. Throughout my experience at Campbell, I have met many different people and as I begin my next chapter as a pharmacist, I will forever cherish the friendships that began here in the Creek.”

CPHS has 52 graduates completing PGY1 and PGY2 residencies as well as fellowships this year. They will specialize in areas of pharmacology, community pharmacy, ambulatory care/psychiatry, oncology, acute track care, internal medicine, cardiology, and general pharmacy.

Campbell University pharmacy graduates will conduct post-graduate training in 13 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The majority of these residents will continue their training in North Carolina with 25 graduates matching in the Tar Heel State.
