Buies Creek, N.C.-Dr. Janet Powell, of the School of Education, is a 2009 recipient of the Campbell University Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award. The awards were presented on Saturday, May 9, at a luncheon held in the Alumni Room of Marshbanks Dining Hall.

Powell is the coordinator of the elementary education program for the School of Education and serves as director of Teacher Education. She works with undergraduate students and coordinates with the School of Education and College of Arts and Sciences faculties to assure that all students seeking teacher licensure meet state requirements for admission to the program and are placed in field positions which will provide them the experiences they need to become successful teachers.

“As the director of Teacher Education, Dr. Powell is the one person on the teacher education faculty who touches the lives of every student completing the teacher education program,” said Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School of Education. “Due to Dr. Powell’s strong leadership all teacher education licensure programs at Campbell University were reaffirmed by the state as part of the recent accreditation visit. Her positive outlook has led to creative changes that will take Campbell’s education programs into the 21st century.”

Powell holds a Bachelor of Science degree from William Jewell College, a master’s in education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. Her vast teaching experience prior to coming to Campbell includes Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Japan.
