Professor Boyd named next clerk of court for Supreme Court of N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law School Assistant Professor and 2001 graduate J. Bryan Boyd has been named the next clerk of court for the Supreme Court of North Carolina, effective June 1. Chief Justice Mark Martin made the announcement on Monday, April 18.

“I am forever grateful to Campbell Law for the education it gave me, the faith it placed in me to serve its students, and the skills and training it fostered in me as I travel on this next journey,” said Boyd. “Most importantly, I am so grateful for every student I have had the pleasure of teaching.

“From a mere two blocks away from the law school, I will continue to serve the legal profession and the citizens of North Carolina. I look forward to this new endeavor and I can’t wait to return to the court. I started my legal career there as a judicial law clerk 15 years ago, and it is fitting that the next chapter of my professional career will take me back, this time serving as the next clerk of the Supreme Court.”

Boyd will mark the court’s 15th clerk of court in Raleigh, replacing Christie Roeder, who will retire on May 31.

“Bryan has been a home run among our students for some time now,” said Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. “We are sad to see him go, but proud to see one of our own serve our state in this most important role. He will excel at his new post, as he does in all arenas.”

Boyd returned to his alma mater as a faculty member in 2003. He previously stood as the associate dean for academic affairs, and has also served as a legal writing professor and director of the Professional Skills Program. Prior to coming home, he clerked for Justice Robert Edmunds Jr. at the Supreme Court of N.C.
