RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law School Professor of Law and former dean Melissa Essary co-moderated the North Carolina Bar Association’s Legal Summit on Tuesday, April 2. The event, “Legal Education & the Profession in Transition,” was held at the North Carolina Bar Center in nearby Cary. Deans and students from each of the state’s seven law schools took part in panel discussions throughout the day, including Campbell Law Interim Dean Keith Faulkner and Campbell Law Student Bar Association President and third-year student Anna Brinkley.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to help lead discussions with law school deans, students, and practicing lawyers on the future of legal education and the changing practice of law,” said Essary. “We were fortunate to have engaged participants and thoughtful conversations, all the while working to better our profession and improve the law school experience for students across North Carolina.
“I was particularly gratified when Anna told the large audience that Campbell Law was the only school she applied to, and that she believes, on every front, that she’s received a relevant, top-notch legal education here.”
Essary moderated the day-long program alongside Raymond Pierce, former dean of North Carolina Central’s law school. Panel discussion topics included a view from the deans of the state’s law schools, student perspectives on the changing landscape in legal education and practice, and a view of the profession from practicing litigators. A response and dialogue session with state business leaders followed the panel discussions.
