Professor Flanary-Smith Co-Presents at Leadership N.C. Event

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law School Assistant Professor of Law Amy Flanary-Smith and Rex Healthcare Director of Palliative Care Dr. Anne Yeager gave a presentation at Leadership North Carolina’s (LNC) Health & Human Services Session on Thursday, Feb. 7. The presentation, “Preparing for a Better Goodbye,” discussed informed consent and advance directives.

Flanary-Smith and Yeager discussed how legal documents work, as well as circumstances where advance directives may help families and their loved ones in the final days of life. Presentation material was drawn from actual experiences, providing the perspective of a palliative care specialist and a health care attorney.

“A conversation about advance directives may not be first on anyone’s list of fun things to do, but discussing your end-of-life wishes with your family, in advance, is a true act of kindness,” said Flanary-Smith. “North Carolina law allows numerous types of directives, and it is important to understand how they can work, and who will speak for you if you are unable to speak for yourself. “

LNC has provided cutting-edge programming to current and emerging leaders from across the state since 1995. Each summer LNC selects a class of approximately 50 engaged citizens to learn about issues related to economic development, education, the environment, health and human services, and government. Participants attend six two-day sessions during the LNC program year. Sessions combine presentations, tours, experiential learning activities, and facilitated dialogue to educate participants about challenges and opportunities facing the state.
