Professor Flanary-Smith Delivers Presentation at Legal Writing Institute Workshop

RALEIGH, N.C. –Campbell Law School Assistant Professor of Law Amy Flanary-Smith gave a presentation at a Legal Writing Institute One Day Workshop at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 30. Flanary-Smith was invited to present on how to integrate a Multistate Performance Test (MPT) question into the first-year, first-semester legal writing curriculum.

In addition to her presentation, Flanary-Smith took the opportunity to discuss Campbell Law’s history, vision, and future with the audience, which included 50 professors and adjunct professors from Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, and the other nearby institutions.

An expert in legal discourse and advocacy, Flanary-Smith serves as the director of Campbell Law’s Legal Research & Writing Program, where she develops a comprehensive curriculum and leads weekly program instruction. Each year, several of Raleigh’s most outstanding practicing attorneys are selected to teach in the program, which allows students to learn about legal discourse in a small class setting while capitalizing on Campbell Law’s historic strengths of practical skills and compassionate advocacy.

An experienced health law attorney, Flanary-Smith holds both litigation and transactional experience. She has represented health care providers in all stages of litigation, from district court to the Supreme Court of North Carolina, and she frequently shares her expertise and consulting skills with North Carolina hospitals and physicians. Her scholarly interests include the intersections of patient competency, capacity, and consent with health care policy.

This past October, Flanary-Smith was elected to a three-year term on the North Carolina Society of Health Care Attorneys (NCSHCA) Board of Directors.
