RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law Associate Professor Kevin Lee and 1980 graduate Tom Brooke will serve as judges for North Carolina’s first-ever access to justice Hackathon this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24-25. North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jackson and Citrix Senior Manager of Business Development Bill O’Boyle will also serve as judges.
The ABA Journal of the American Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Association are combining efforts to host the event at Campbell Law School.
“This is an exciting event,” said Lee. “The Raleigh area is poised to be a leader in the development of cutting-edge legal technology that will literally transform the world.”
The Hackathon is an opportunity for local programmers, web developers and tech-savvy attorneys to use their legal, entrepreneurial and coding skills to help the legal aid community by creating a technology-enabled solution for challenges faced by North Carolinians who cannot afford a lawyer.
Throughout the two-day event, representatives from legal aid organizations throughout North Carolina and other lawyers and legal professionals will be on site to discuss the unique issues that they and their clients face and the types of solutions they seek. Contestants are also encouraged to come up with their own ideas to help legal aid lawyers better use their limited resources and more effectively serve their clients.
Lee and Brooke work in collaboration to share the leadership of North Carolina’s Hack the Law meet up, which currently includes well over 300 participants. Legal hacking groups include lawyers, law students, developers, academics, entrepreneurs, technologists and policy makers interested in the changing nature of the law and legal industry.
