RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law Assistant Professor of Law Lisa Lukasik presented at the 47th annual School Attorneys’ Conference on Friday, Feb. 7 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government. Lukasik led the conference program on special education litigation and introduced participants to her research on data derived from a review of administrative decisions in this area.
“It was an honor and a delight to participate in the School of Government’s well-established conference along with some of the state’s premier education law attorneys,“ said Lukasik. “At this year’s conference, I was particularly proud to see so many former students in attendance and enjoying fulfilling careers in public school law.“
In addition to teaching at Campbell Law, Lukasik regularly presents her scholarship and research at education-related conferences. Earlier this month she presented on special education litigation at the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children’s annual conference. Lukasik also recently accepted an appointment by the State Board of Education to a three-year term as a State Hearing Review Officer in special education administrative appeals.
Lukasik earned her undergraduate degree with honors from Washington University in St. Louis, where she graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her law degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, where she graduated as a member of the Order of the Coif. Her recent scholarship on public school law appears in the North Carolina Law Review and the Virginia Journal of Social Policy and the Law.
Prior to Campbell Law, Lukasik served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, practiced education law at Tharrington Smith LLP and clerked for the Honorable Willis P. Whichard, former dean of Campbell Law, on the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
The day-long School Attorney’s Conference offers school board attorneys and superintendents the opportunity to learn about and discuss current issues related to public education law. In addition to special education litigation, program topics include teacher-tenure changes and challenges, authority of the superintendent in employment matters, governmental and public official immunity, ethics and removing elected board members from office.
